If you mention the term “SDGs” to friends and family, chances are, you’ll get a blank look. Many individuals have never heard of an “SDG” and have no idea what it is. People who work in corporate social responsibility or for an NGO or who take part in Fridays for Futures demos are familiar with the concept but what about the rest of us? Let’s have a closer look at the “SDGs”, and in particular SDG 4, and let’s find out how and why they are relevant to us and our lives today.
What are the SDGs?
The Sustainable Development Goals are also known as the SDGs. These are 17 goals that were agreed to in 2015 at a United Nations summit by leaders from around the world1. These goals make up a plan of action which is called the “2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”.
What is sustainable development?
The world is developing all the time. Populations are growing; resources are being used and used up. With all of this development and consumption, big challenges are popping up that will affect the future of our planet and its people. Sustainable development means that we identify and implement new ways to develop so that our planet isn’t destroyed in the process and future generations don’t lose out. We need to work together to find smart solutions for a sustainable world.
Former UN Secretary-General Ban-Ki Moon put it like this:
“A sustainable world is one where people can escape poverty and enjoy decent work without harming the earth’s essential ecosystems and resources; where people can stay healthy and get the food and water they need; where everyone can access clean energy that doesn’t contribute to climate change; where women and girls are afforded equal rights and equal opportunities.”
Why will future generations lose out if we don’t develop sustainably?
There are many examples. If we don’t curb pollution, eventually our air will not be healthy enough to breathe, resulting in illness. If we keep using chemicals and plastics that enter our waterways, sea life will be contaminated and perish. If we enable political decisions that negatively affect livelihoods elsewhere, we will force people to migrate for work and survival. If we continue to encroach on natural habitats, for example through deforestation and mining, we are ignoring the long-term ecological consequences and are even facilitating pandemics.
If we don’t support education in developing countries, and in doing so SDG 4, young people won’t have opportunities to learn and acquire skills that could help and protect them and strengthen the future of their own communities and economies.
What problem should the SDGs solve?
The SDGs were developed primarily to eradicate global poverty, but to achieve that, the goals take into consideration that the planet needs to be protected, that people everywhere need to prosper, that peace must be fostered and that the world needs to act as one.
But weren’t we trying to eradicate poverty before the SDGs came along in 2015?
Yes, but the SDGs are different to previous efforts. First off, the SDGs take a bigger picture perspective. Secondly, the SDGs have been agreed to by the global community. Thirdly, the SDGs take the specific causes of poverty into consideration. Last but not least, with the SDG 2030 Agenda, actual targets are laid down for the reaching of each of the 17 goals.

Tell me about the targets for each SDG.
There are 169 targets across the 17 sustainable development goals.
Goal 1, for example, calls for an end to poverty in all its forms everywhere. One of the targets here is to: “Implement nationally appropriate social protection systems and measures for all, including floors, and by 2030 achieve substantial coverage of the poor and the vulnerable.”
Another example of targets is one in goal 3 that looks at promoting healthy lives and well-being for all at all ages: “By 2030, ensure universal access to sexual and reproductive health-care services, including family planning information and education, and the integration of reproductive health into national strategies and programmes.”
Who implements the SDGs?
National governments are responsible for changing or introducing policies that will help to achieve the goals and their targets. In Germany, the government has a National Sustainable Development Strategy that is aligned with the SDGs and the Agenda 2030.
Are the SDG targets being met? How can I find out the status?
The United Nations releases a Sustainable Development Goals Report every year that outlines the progress of the SDGs.
Of course, 2020 was a year like no other and COVID-19 has had a very detrimental effect on the targets being met. But even before 2020, progress was shaky and not happening as quickly as planned. We know ourselves from daily reports that the environment continues to deteriorate, and that poverty is alive and kicking. As a result of the pandemic though, education has been massively disrupted globally and health systems are stressed.
The events of 2020 have shone a fresh light on the fragility of our planet, its systems and its peoples, the massive inequality in society and the urgent need to take action together.

What is SDG 4?
This Sustainable Development Goal deals with education. SDG 4 ensures inclusive and quality education and promotes lifelong learning opportunities for all. SDG 4 has 10 targets such as:

• universal free primary and secondary education
• access to at least one year of preschool education
• achievement of universal literacy
• building and upgrading of inclusive and safe schools

Target 4.7 even makes allowance for learners to acquire knowledge and skills that promote sustainable development.
What has education got to do with sustainable development?
Sustainability is built on three pillars: environmental, economic and social.
Education enables upward socioeconomic mobility. It is a key to escaping poverty.  Just imagine if you had no education. How would you cope in our modern world? Your prospects would be severely limited. As a non-educated person, can you imagine the lifelong limitations, with far fewer opportunities leading to lower self-confidence, frustration, stress, distress and yes – poverty?

Are the SDG 4 targets on track to being met?
If we go back to the Sustainable Development Goals Report for 2020, we discover that there’s a massive amount of work and change to be done if these targets are to be achieved by 2030. According to the report, 200 million children will still be out of school by then. The pandemic brought the importance of hygiene and disease prevention to the fore, but according to the report, only 65% of primary schools have handwashing facilities that are critical for the prevention of, amongst other things, Covid-19.

How can I, as a private individual, support SDG 4?
Start by identifying organisations whose goals are in line with sustainable development and the facilitation of educational opportunities.
Find a way to help those organisations to reach their goals. Maybe you could support actively as a volunteer and teach refugee children and young people to learn German or computer skills. That would give them a great start in their new home. Or you could donate to an organisation that is helping children to get to school and finish their education.

I work in internal communications for a company that wants to make SDG 4 a core aim of their CSR policy. How do I help my employer do that?
Many companies pick out 3 or 4 SDGs that they would like to support as part of their corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme. There are many steps in the successful implementation of a CSR strategy, but for a start, check the websites of NGOs and charities to see what their mission is, if education is a core part of their programme, and how they cooperate with companies.
For some organisations, a donation is always welcome and they can highlight to you the projects where help is required.
Other NGOS offer companies an opportunity to be truly connected with the project they are supporting, with opportunities to visit and see the impact of the project work on-site.
We will look more closely at CSR and how companies work with NGOs in a future blog.
